Historic Properties Exchange: HISTORIC PROPERTY OFFERING IN FARMINGTON, CT

The Connecticut Department of Transportation invites written proposals for the relocation of 768 Farmington Avenue (Route 4), also known as the Andrus Building in Farmington, Connecticut.

The structure is located within the Jonesville Community, in the Farmington Historic District along Farmington Avenue (Route 4), from the intersection with Garden Street, easterly to Mountain Spring Road.

The structure, constructed circa 1896, is a rectangular, two story post and beam, two bay wide wood platform frame commercial building with a gable roof and a brick foundation.

Two exterior brick chimneys are located on the ridge and northwest slope near the rear of the building.

The building currently contains five rectangular office rooms, a boiler room, an entrance vestibule, two and one-half bathrooms and an attic.  Interior features include new drywall on the ceilings and the walls, carpeting and hardwood flooring.  Historic features are limited to wainscoting on ceilings and within the corridors, as well as narrow plank wood floors.

The overall dimension of the building covers a gross area of approximately 1,150 square feet.

It is the opinion of the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office that 768 Farmington Avenue, as part of the Farmington Historic District, is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.  The property will be transferred subject to the recipient agreeing to move the structure within the district only.  The structure will be available for relocation in the spring of 2010.

Potential recipients must be able to demonstrate their ability to assume legal and financial responsibility for the structure, including holding highway agencies harmless in any liability action.  Any non-governmental party must be able to demonstrate its economic and administrative ability to perform the relocation of the structure, such as security bond, a trust fund, or a reverter to some other responsible agency.

All interested parties should submit written proposals to the attention of Mr. Keith T. Hall, Transportation Supervising Planner at the Connecticut Department of Transportation, 2800 Berlin Turnpike, and P.O. Box 317546, Newington, CT 06131-7546.  Telephone number - (860) 594-2926.  All proposals will be accepted until October 19, 2009 and reviewed within a thirty-day period.

The state reserves the rights to accept or reject any or all proposals and to withdraw this invitation at any time before or after proposals are open.
