Wakelee Road Barn, Roxbury
On June 23rd in Roxbury, Todd Levine, Director of Historic Barns of Connecticut, a project of Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation, State Rep. Arthur O'Neill and State Sen. Rob Kane presented a Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation Barns Grant check and a citation from the Connecticut General Assembly to Elizabeth Lacy for the preservation of the historic barn located on her property.
In April, Lacy was awarded $5,712.50 for a conditions assessment report and to perform repairs in order to stabilize the historic barn. This English bank barn was built during the 19th century and is an excellent example of scribe rule framing. Constructed of hand hewn beams, the exterior siding consists of vertical tongue-and-groove barn board. During the mid 1800s, this farm was occupied by James Wakelee, namesake of the road.
In all, the Connecticut Trust awarded a total of $102,288.00 in Barns Grants to municipalities, non-profit (501c3) organizations, and private citizens across the state. The grants will make possible a total initial investment of $308,820.00 in these historic sites.
The grants are part of a historic preservation technical assistance and granting program of the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation, with funding from the Community Investment Act of the State of CT and the Connecticut General Assembly. The purpose of the Barns Grant is to support efforts to preserve the iconic historic barns of Connecticut.
Established in 1975 as a non-profit organization by Special Act of the Connecticut General Assembly, the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation protects and nourishes the vitality of significant buildings and landscapes.
